This past week has been the best week I’ve had in years, mostly because I only sell part time. I ran a sale over the 4th of July weekend and I really think that helped.

I didnt list that much this week but I just received another promo from eBay so it’s time to get back to work.

So on to this week’s sales.

make money selling on ebay

I did a lot of work last week..and it paid off. I almost doubled what I made last week.

I took advantage of a listing promotion from eBay to add a bunch of CDs that I owned, plus some other items. Even though most people just buy digital music, there are some who still want a physical CD.

I decided to mostly set the price for all of the CDs at $6.95, regardless of whether my price was higher than others or not. I plan on running sales in the future and I want to be able to make some sort of profit after shipping and fees.

Also, even if I need to eventually reduce the price even more, I figured I should price my items a little higher so I’d have some room to markdown.

Even though I got through a lot of my backlog, I wasn’t able to list everything. That’s perfectly ok because i’m making progress and moving closer to my goal.

My goal for July is to get everything listed and make $1,000. My sales hover around $450 a month, with very minimal effort on my part. Since I have two small kids, my time is pretty limited.

That also brings me to my other goal for the month. This year I wanted to create at least one information product. I need to find a way to create passive or at least less active income than eBay. As much as love eBay and thrifting, I only have so many hours in a day and my time is limited because of my family responsibilities. My whole purpose of wanting to be a stay at home mom was to be able to spend time with my kids and watch them grow. It’s hard to do that sometimes when I’m listing during the day. But until I get my inventory where it needs to be or until I create more passive income streams, I have to do what i have to do.

So on to this week’s sales.

make money selling on ebay

This week I reached one of my goals for the year. I’m now a Bronze Power Seller! I actually forgot about this goal until I noticed the little icon next to my feedback. I’m actually pretty pumped because I haven’t really been selling that much. But I’m not sure if it’s actually going to translate into more sales.

Speaking of sales..this week sales have been pretty slow. I expected as much since I was away visiting my mom, my handling time was extended and I didn’t list anything.

I am happy though that another household item sold. My husband gave me a pair of old sandals to sell. I didn’t think much of them but they turned out to be the highest sale of the week.

So on to this week’s sales.

Sales for the week of June 14-20, 2015

My husband’s old stuff may be more valuable than I thought. When he first gave me the sandals to sell, I was thinking “who wants these”. Well boy was I wrong.

make money selling on ebay

This past week eBay sales has been pretty good. I listed more items and I believe as a result, sold more. Even though my total amount sold is still nowhere where I need them to be, I do believe I’m heading in the right direction.

One thing that helped me list more this week was taking pictures downstairs with the kids. Normally I wait until they’re in bed before I start working. But I got pretty desperate so I brought some inventory downstairs to start taking pictures and listing. Even though it took forever to complete a listing, I was still able to get a decent amount done.

Consignment items

Normally I don’t like to sell items on consignment. I’m able to find plenty of inexpensive inventory where I live. Also since it takes the same amount of time to complete the listings, it’s like I’m doing all the work for half the pay. I only have limited time to work on listing and it’s really not worth it for me. My mom gave me a dress and a pair of shoes to sell months ago. Going forward, I do not plan on accepting any consignment items from anyone. If they have things to sell, I would be happy to show them how it’s done.

So on to this week’s sales.

Sales for the week of June 7-13, 2015
Total Items in Store: 186 (as of 6/15/15)
Items Sold: 6
Cost of Items Sold: approx. $5.30 (2 household items)
Total Sales: $114.75 ($24.90 household items)
Highest Price Sold: $40
Lowest Price Sold: $9.95

brown hush puppies

Men’s Hushpuppies – Paid: $4/Sold: $40

Lessons learned: Don’t accept any items on consignment. It took me months just to get two items listed and it’s just not worth my time or the commission.

I’ve also realized that I need to be flexible when it comes to listing. I may have to bring my inventory to another location to get work done.

This week I’m traveling visiting family so I’m not sure how much I’ll be able to get listed once I get back home. But I’m hoping to get at least 10 new items up.

Make Money From Spring – Summer Cleaning

Posted on

make money from spring cleaning

My family and friends are always curious as to what I sell and how I make money from eBay. Some are interested in selling themselves but they really don’t know where to start.

I basically sell anything that I think will make me money. I don’t want to narrow down to any particular niche because I like to be able to source inventory from anywhere. I don’t have to time to only look for certain items.

Normally about 90% of my inventory comes from outside my house. But for the next few weeks, everything is going to be in-house. It’s spring/summer cleaning time!

After my husband banned me from shopping until I listed everything, I thought what could I sell from my house? Normally I just sell my stepson’s outgrown clothes. But then I got to thinking, why not get rid of everybody’s stuff. Our house is overflowing with things we either don’t use, don’t need or can’t fit. Pretty much every room has something in it that can be sold.

Another great reason to purge is because we have outgrown our compact cars. With two car seats and a growing preteen, it’s time for a truck.

So I thought, why not sell our stuff and use that money towards a down payment. We want to keep our debt down and this is a great way to do that.

How much would I like to make?

I would really love to make $5,000.  But I doubt I really have that much extra stuff in my house. After thinking about what’s in each room/space, I think around $1200 is a lot more reasonable. Here’s a breakdown of what I think I may be able to get per space.

Room Estimated Amount
Living Room/Coat Closet $200
Kitchen $100
Master bedroom $500
Kids’ rooms $500

We want to get a used truck around the end of the summer so I really don’t have that much time. Every week when I do my sales updates, I’ll include what I sold and how much from my family. Is anyone else doing any spring/summer cleaning?

what sold on ebayAnother slow week has gone by with minimal sales. I can’t blame anyone but myself because I barely listed anything. There were several days that as soon as the kids sent to sleep, I did as well.

I’ve also been working on a new niche site and that takes up my time as well. Even though eBay is my main business, I still feel the need to diversify my income. Anything can happen and I can suspend or kicked off. I can’t put all efforts into a business that I don’t have complete control over.

So on to this week’s sales.

Army officer shirt – Paid: free/Sold: $14.95

Lessons learned: In order for me to make more money, I need to list more items. Plain and simple. As my new listings go down, so do my sales.

Also I need to be patient when selling shoes. I purchased a pair of Ann Klein shoes a few months ago and they finally sold.

Don’t be afraid to sell items with issues. I sold a shirt that had a few small holes in them. I disclosed this in the listing and the shirt sold without any issues. The buyer also left great feedback mentioning how honest I was.

As a new week begins, my goal is to finish listing my entire inventory. I’m actually closer than I realized to reaching this goal. After everything is listed, it’s time to go shopping again. I’m hoping I can make it to Goodwill’s 50% off sale this Thursday.

Make Money Selling on Ebay: What Sold the Week of May 24-30, 2015

Another week has gone by and I still haven’t completed my goal of listing 100 items in a week. Trying to work at home with two small kids is proving to be very difficult. But since I put in my two weeks’ notice at my job, I don’t really have a choice but to make it work.

On a positive note, I did have an increase in sales. I ran a sale over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Several of my higher priced items sold, which resulted in my biggest sales week in a long time. These items were a part of a lot I won at an auction. I paid $10 plus tax for 6 appliances/electronics/household goods. I had to travel about an hour and 20 minutes to get there but the trip has more than paid for itself.

So on to this week’s sales.

Sales for the week of May 24-30, 2015

Items Sold: 8
Cost of Items Sold: approx. $7.65 (one dress shirt was free)

presto pressure cooker

Pressure cooker – Paid: $1.77/Sold: 39.96

As I mentioned, I am nowhere near where I need to be as far as listings and profits go. I’m going to have to find the time/energy to list after the kids go to bed or before they wake up. Fortunately I still have plenty of unlisted inventory so I don’t have to spend time shopping.

Lessons learned for the week:

  1. Sales work – I’ve ran sales several times and whenever I do, I always sell something.
  2. Don’t be afraid to list worn items – The Daytimer I sold had scratches and scuff marks and it still sold.
  3. Be willing to reject or counter an offer – Someone offered me $15 for a Daytimer planner that I was selling for $29.95. I was willing to accept $21.95 but they didn’t accept it. A few days later it sold for $22.95 (it was on sale).
  4. Board games aren’t for me – I jumped on the board game bandwagon but apparently I didn’t pick the right ones. The profit margins just aren’t enough for me to bother with them.

My goal for the week is to try to list at least 5 items a day. Maybe that will be more reasonable. How were your sales for the week?

Make Money Selling Used Books on Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) – My $7.95 Book Experiment

Posted on

Even though I’ve been selling on Amazon FBA for a about a year now, my sales haven’t been all that impressive. But to be honest, I haven’t been putting that much effect into it either. As I transition from working outside the home, to being a work at home mom, I decided I wanted to ramp up my FBA inventory and start sending more items into their warehouse.

A few weeks ago I went to an auction and got 36 free books that someone didn’t want. I knew I didn’t want to try and sell them one by one on eBay so I figured FBA would be the best option. It’s a great way for me to free up space in my house as well as see if I can increase my inventory.

As I was scanning the books to check the sales rank and the current price, I realized that most of the books were ranked really high (in the 1 million or above range) with few FBA sellers, really low (under 100k) with a lot of other sellers or in the middle.

When checking the current price, it seemed that most were in the $5 range. I figured in order for me to see some sort of profit after Amazon takes their fees, I wanted to try and sell them for at least $7.50. A few books I priced a little higher to match the lowest price. The inbound shipping charge to Amazon was $16.04. After FBA fees and shipping, I should net about $1.66 per book. Obviously this is nothing earth shattering. But since the books were free, I’d be happy with any profit.

My objective with this experiment is:

  1. See if these books will actually sell at $7.50, even if there are books priced lower
  2. How long will it take for the books to sell?
  3. How much money can I make off of free books?

I’ll be checking back in over the next few months with any updates. Do you sell books on Amazon FBA? Do you have a certain minimum price point regardless of sales rank?

I’m beginning to realize it’s going to take me a while to post all my inventory lol. I didn’t know I had so much stuff until my husband banned me from thrifting because of all the unlisted inventory I had. Maybe I need to change my goal to the end of June to have everything listed.

I did complete my goal of sending inventory into FBA (more on that in another post) and opening a business bank account.

I’ve had some sales this week dispute not really listing anything. I did start prepping and cleaning some items to be listed. I’m almost done with the appliances I got from the auction and after that I will be left with clothes and the rest of the stuff that my family already owns.

After reading a few online Facebook groups and seeing the impressive sales that some WAH moms have been having, I see that I need to really make a schedule. I’ve been avoiding making one because I figured I would just get things done but I’m not being as effective with my time as I need to be.

My goal for the week is to try and complete 100 listings. I just received another listing promotion from eBay for 2,000 free listings on 30 day items. I know that’s a bit ambitious but I have a student loan payment coming up.

What are your goals for the week?

Make Money Selling on Ebay: What Sold the Week of May 10-16, 2015

This week I did not reach my goal of listing my entire inventory. However, I did get a decent amount listed. Since I stayed up several nights out the week to get work done, I eventually burned myself out and was exhausted by the end of the week. I just couldn’t list anymore and haven’t done so in days.

I did however reactive my Bonanza store. I opened it years ago and had it deactivated when I wasn’t selling much. Even though I never had a bunch of sales on there, I figured why not reactive. The problem I’m having with it so far is that it’s pulling in too much inventory. Some of the items are duplicated or have been sold a while ago.

At first I had the buy it now option selected so that buyers could purchase their items immediately, but since it seems to be a bit buggy, I will just approve or deny purchases depending on if I still have it listed on eBay. Hopefully they will get this fixed soon and my inventory will import correctly.

After weeks of slow sales I figured it was time to get back to working on my other business ventures. As much as I enjoy eBay, I can’t completely depend on them for my income. I outsourced a few articles for a fairly new niche site I’ve been working on. I’m hoping that once I start adding content on a regular basis, I’ll be able to get some organic traffic from the search engines.

On to this week’s numbers.

Last week I forgot to add in my sales from Amazon. I sent the items into FBA so long ago that I don’t even think about receiving a payment from them. I sold two things last week for a total of $22.49. One was a music bingo game that I paid $2.25. It sold for $12.50. The other item was a spanky vhs tape that I got at the GWO. I don’t remember how much it cost but it was probably less than $1. It sold for $9.99.

Overall I’m happy with the increase in sales. But it’s still not enough for me to be able to help support my family. For this week my goal is to continue working on listing, send in some inventory to FBA and finally make it to the bank to finish opening my business account. I started online but now they want a deposit.

How did you do this week and what are your goals?
