make money selling on ebay

Wow I cant believe it’s been like a month since I last posted anything. Over the last few weeks we’ve been renovating our house and I’ve been staying with my mother in law. I changed the handling time on my store to 15 days and sales almost came to a complete halt.

Since the work is almost finished, I changed my handling time back to one day. I’m able to get in and out my house with whatever inventory has sold and ship it out.

During this time, I had two returns. Both items didn’t fit. Was was clothes and one for an appliance part. The bad thing about the appliance part is that it came back broken. The way it was wrapped I don’t think it was damaged in shipping but I have no way to prove that the customer did so I just refunded the item. They gave me positive feedback but rated me low on item not as described. I don’t understand that since I clearly mentioned what the part was for and included pictures. Ebay refused to remove the defect.

Right now I’m close to losing my top rated status. I need to work on some more sales so I can create more of a buffer. On a positive note, I’m going to a $5 bag sale next Saturday. You’re allowed to fit as many clothes as you can into a brown paper bag. Last year I bought 6 bags and had close to 100 items.

So on to this week’s sales.

Lessons learned:

It’s always good to have some sort of inventory built up for down times. Since I’ve been displaced the last month, my sales have slowed down, but I still have had some sales. If my inventory had been way smaller, I dont think I would have made any money.

Since I’ve been listing a little bit more, my sales have started to pick up some. I also ran a sale over the Labor Day weekend.

I was almost caught up with my backlog and then I went to an auction. It was so much fun and totally worth the hour and 20 minute drive. I have several boxes of items to go through and list for sale. It seems like at least half will go on Ebay and the other half I’ll send to Amazon FBA.

This week I sold a dress on consignment for my mother in law.  I asked the question on a Facebook group that I’m in, “why would anyone sell consignment items when they can source plenty of inexpensive inventory?” Someone mentioned that they would rather have half of a $30 sale than all of a $10 sale. Or something to that effect. Just because I’m able to find inexpensive items, that doesnt mean that they are only selling for a little amount. I will say that I was less picky before about items because I could get them so cheap, but I’ve since stopped buying cheap items and started focusing on purchasing things that will sell for at least $20. I’m still trying to find the benefit of listing items on consignment. So if you have some please let me know.

make money on ebay

The last few weeks I’ve been seriously slacking. I’ve been doing some work but I’m not where I want to be as far as eBay sales.

Thankfully I received a new promotion that allows me to list 500 items up until October 15. Even though I already get 150 listings a month, the additional listings are going to give me the extra motivation that I need to get back to work.

I’m going to an auction this weekend and depending on what I get, I’ll be going to the GWO outlet on Monday as well. I want to build up my store to at least 500 items and the only way to do that is to continue working.

How I Got Approved In The Restricted Health and Beauty Category On Amazon FBA

How I Got Approved In The Restricted Health

I’m so excited that I got approved!

I’d been researching for weeks, watching Youtube videos and reading every blog post that I could find. I wanted to try to get approved on the first try without having to resubmit more and more paperwork to Amazon.

The first thing that I did was order extra coupons online. I purchased 10 inserts for the week. I knew that CVS was having a sale on Almay & V05 products coming up and I wanted to reduce my costs. I’m sure I could have found cheaper items, but I also wanted products I could eventually send in to sell as well.

After my coupons came in I went shopping. On my first trip I bought 10 Almay Lip glosses. During my research, I noted that people were saying they needed to prove to Amazon that they were purchasing enough products for resale so I decided to get 10 of everything. Since I earned some Extracare bucks, I came back the next day and got 10 V05 products. I also picked up some health and personal care products for later.

I also went to Target and bought 10 Garnier products. Since I spent over a certain amount, I was able to get 2 different $5 gift cards that I could use during my visit. I just had to split up the transactions.

When I got home, I typed up my name, address, phone number, email and ASIN number for each of the products that was on the receipt I was going to submit. Then I printed it out and photocopied the receipt that corresponded to those ASIN numbers. I had three different receipts from Target and I included them all on one page. Also since my Target doesnt include their address on the receipt, I typed their address and printed it out and taped it on the receipt so that when I copied it, it looked like it belonged there.

Before I submitted the receipts, I blacked out all the prices with a marker and then scanned the paper into my computer.

In total, I submitted three PDF’s with the receipts for all the products.

I submitted everything on a Friday afternoon. Even though the email said I would hear back in 24 hours, I didnt get a response until late Tuesday night.

So far I’ve sent in the majority of the products I got from CVS & Target. Some of the lip glosses I bought were in the Health & Personal care category so I have to wait on those. I also sent in some makeup I got from an online auction. So far I’ve sold one Garnier and one makeup product.

The process was alot easier than I thought it would be. The part that took the longest was waiting for them to get back to me. In the coming weeks, I want to get approved in more categories. I’m reading a book that I downloaded from Kindle Unlimited that’s supposed to help get you approved in some of the other gated categories. After I get approved, I’ll give a review to see if the book helped or not.

How successful have you been getting approved in gated categories?

sell on ebay

My sales improved last week even though I didnt list nearly as much as I wanted to. The week started off good but then I got distracted and started sending in inventory to Amazon FBA. The good news is that items are starting to sell over there. Including some of the products I purchased to get approved to sell in the beauty category.

Even though I had some sales, they were all of all value items. I’m still working on clearing these items out of my inventory. Going forward, the only low cost items I will have are the things that I want to sell from my own household.

Lessons learned: I need to continue to pay attention to what I pay for things. I overpaid for the Arkansas hat and barely made anything. It was a nice hat and I thought it would have sold for more. When I’m out thrifting, I need to be more selective when spending more than a dollar. I know that may sound crazy, but I have 3 Goodwill outlets and countless other thrift stores around me.

I have been seriously slacking the last few weeks and my sales reflect that. If been busy enjoying the summer and working on amazon shipments that I haven’t made the time to list on eBay.

While I enjoy the ease of amazon handing orders, I’m missing the cash that came from my eBay sales. Not to mention the money that I over spent on inventory. It’s trying to get back to eBay and building up my inventory again.

My goal is to list at least 5 things a day until I get my back log completed. I’m sure some days I’m not going to be able to complete that, but that’s my plan.

I also applied to sell in the gated health and beauty category on amazon the 14th and I’m still anxiously awaiting their reply. Once I get approved, I plan on sending in the inventory I purchased for approval. I’ll post about that separately once I get a reply back.

So on to this week’s sales.

Buying Used Liquidation Books and Makeup to Sell on Ebay and Amazon FBA

Liquidation Lot

07

I’ve had some success previously selling books so I decided to purchase a liquidation lot of books and makeup. The books had a manifest that included the book titles but not the isbn number. I paid $195.49 for 91 books (I haven’t counted them all yet). This was more than I would normally want to pay, but after looking up a few books from the manifest, I thought that I would at least be able to get my money back.

I paid $145.25 for 325 (I haven’t counted them all yet) makeup products. Even if I’m unable to send them into Amazon (after I got approval), I figured I could still sell them on ebay if i needed to.

Over the last few days I’ve been scanning the books and it seems like the profit that I make is going to be to be close to what I paid. I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to recoup my costs since some of the books are either slow sellers, are seriously old or are damaged. I’m still holding out hope that I’ll be able to make some money but it’s definitely going to take a few months.

My goal is to have all the books sent in by the end of the week and then I can start listing the makeup. I’ll doing sales updates over the next few months to show if this purchase was a winner or loser.

Have you purchased liquidation products before?

make money selling on ebay

The last two weeks have been seriously slow. I removed some slow/low selling items from my store. I also removed some products to send into Amazon FBA. Since I’ve been so busy with Amazon, I haven’t been doing any listing on eBay. I have another shipment to send into Amazon, then I can get back to my eBay listing. I can definitely see what happens when I’m not listing.

So on to this week’s sales.

Sales for the week of July 26-August 1, 2015

Highest Price Sold: $50
Lowest Price Sold: $3.49
International Sales: 0
Returns: 1
Money Spent on New Inventory This Week: 0
Number of items listed this week: 8

Lessons learned:

If I don’t list, then I don’t get paid. I can see a correlation between listing and selling. When I’m regularly listing new items, I’m selling at least a few things a week. Over the last two weeks, I haven’t listed anything and my sales have come to almost a halt.

Another thing I need to realized and keep in mind is to stay away from low cost items. They’re not worth the hassle and they’re not going to net me enough to make good money.

make money selling on ebay

This week’s sales have been pretty decent, even though I haven’t listed much. I’m been in a rut lately and I’m having a hard time staying motivated. I’ve been extra tired dealing with household chores and taking care of my kids.

This has got me thinking that I need to continue working on other, less time intensive, income streams.

The N64 that was returned because the customer said it was cracked, was returned and sold again within the week for a higher price. However, I did get a defect that eBay wont remove. I also got another return and defect on a Gamebody accessory. For some reason I don’t think I tested it and the buyer said it didn’t work. The worst part about the whole thing is that the item was priced so cheap. I should have just left it in the store to begin with.

On a positive note, I did get another Amazon sale on the free books that I received at the auction. I listed most of the books at $7.95 even if there were other FBA sellers or those selling it for much cheaper. With all the FBA fees, I’m only making $1.96 per sale. But, I dont have to keep these items in my house and once they’re sent in, I dont have to worry about shipping them out later on. I’m going to start sourcing more books in the future to see if I can increase my income and time.

So on to this week’s sales.

Lessons learned:

1. Test all electronics – If I cant find a way to test, then I will list for parts only. I would rather do that than get another defect or a return.

2. Stop buying low priced items – I have a tendency to pick up items at that have a low resale value. I need to keep reminding myself that I need to make a profit and should only buy things that I think I can get more than $20.

This past week has been another good week for me selling on eBay. I even had a sale on Bonanza. I got another return this week for a Gameboy radio that didn’t work. I’m mad at myself because i didn’t test it and will most likely get a defect. It was also such a low dollar item that I should have just not listed it to begin with.

One a good note, the Nintendo 64 that was returned last week, because of a crack that happened during shipping, has been resold for more money.

So on to this week’s sales.

Motherhood Maternity Dress – this was one of my maternity dresses that I originally bought at a thrift store.
Paid: free/Sold: $20.76 (sale)

Lessons learned:

1. Research shipping for larger items before shipping. It cost me $56 to send the Wii. I should have looked into Fedex or UPS ground when I listed it to see if it would have been cheaper.

2. Stop buying lost cost items. I don’t mind listing low cost items from my house but when I’m thrifting, I have a tendency to buy cheap thing. Which leads to me asking, “Why am I not making any money”? It’s because I was selling such cheap things. Once the higher priced items started selling, my Paypal account was looking better and better.

I’m so close to reach 300 items in my store. My goal for the week is to get to 300.
